Blair Atholl Golf Course

Having been involved on the estate from its inception some 5 years ago, starting with the Clubhouse and pro-shop, Quadrant has completed some 17 custom residential projects and more recently upgrading the Bar facilities at the clubhouse. Notably, no single design or specification has been re-used on any project on the estate, ensuring a fully customised fit out ranging from Kitchens, B.I.C.s, vanity units, bars, staircases, various types of furniture and wine cellars.

Re-engineering a European-based design specification for African conditions is not the easiest. Quadrant needed to keep the high-end look-and- feel but address issues like budget, turn-around times and substituting exotic materials with those available locally. Importantly, the design had to be approved by the European-based parent company. Some small changes were made with a large impact on lowering the budget on the project but in no way did the changes impede on the euro-styled design. Other Salon/Spa/Wellness projects include Mohlware Day Spa, Northriding; Matis, Fourways and Melrose Arch; Lanna Spa, Fourways; Savanna Spa; Blair Atholl; and CopperLeaf Spa, Centurion.

Having been involved with Dreamnails from 2004, Quadrant was able to provide a project-specific turnkey solution. The client needed a solution based on the following requirements: Short downtime when revamping (14 days), full professional facilities (store design, liase between architect/centre management and client, Council drawings and approval, assisting in business plans for prospective clients) and a one-stop-shopfitting solution incorporating all sub-contractors like plumbing, tiling, painting, electrical, shopfronts, air/con and fire reticulation. In addition to running these projects across South Africa, Quadrant was able to provide meaningful input when the client embarked on a new store design in 2008. Other Salon/Spa/Wellness projects include Mohlware Day Spa, Northriding; Matis, Fourways and Melrose Arch; Lanna Spa, Fourways; Savanna Spa; Blair Atholl; and CopperLeaf Spa, Centurion.

Altech Autopage

Autopage Menlyn Park is an example of the turnkey service offered by Quadrant Design. The brief was to create a modern retail cellular outlet incorporating the corporate ID while catering for the client's need to sit customers in cubicles. The retail display and merchandising areas were designed within the constraints of the existing store. The materials used needed to be cost-effective to meet budget constraints and the design needed to incorporate a modern look and feel but had to ensure that the store would not look dated with time.

ABOUT

Quadrant Designs manufactures corporate furniture and interiors to customer specification. These solutions can be purchased outright or rented over a three to five year period. We will trade-in furniture and interiors after three, four or five years and replace with new furniture or a new interior design, based around the customer's changing needs. This gives corporates the ability to regularly upgrade their furniture and interiors, brand and image. Experience shows that by upgrading the work environment enhances the brand, image and staff morale. Companies not upgrading their image regularly find that their staff tends to stay in the mindset of the old furniture and environment; 70s, 80s, 90s. Experience shows that this can negatively affect the company's image and brand. We have seen the benefits when organisations regularly review their working environment to keep apace with changing market perceptions. Brand awareness, perceived quality, customer loyalty, brand association and personality are necessary to compete in today's market place. Organisatons are discovering that brands have a lifecycle and need to be updated to keep pace with ever-changing market needs. Your reception and office area is most certainly part of your brand.

Consider grandfather's roll-top desk, a valued treasure passed on from generation to generation. Taking good care of your solid hardwood furniture ensures its longevity. It's easy and largely a matter of common sense. Heat, humidity and hardwoods Did you know that up to half the weight of freshly sawn wood is water? Hard wood furniture is crafted from wood that is carefully dried, retaining just enough moisture for the furniture to properly acclimate to the relative humidity in your home. The wood in furniture continues to exchange moisture with the air, shrinking and expanding in response to changes in relative humidity. Like your own skin, solid hardwood furniture's natural response to extremely dry air is to lose moisture and shrink a bit. The halves of an extension table may part slightly or a few tiny openings may appear on a solid wood surface. This will correct itself as the relative humidity rises, and the hardwood absorbs enough moisture to expand slightly. On the other hand, if you don't have an air conditioner or dehumidifier, your home's relative humidity may get too high. Parts of your hardwood furniture may absorb excess moisture from the air and expand, perhaps causing drawers to stick. Once again, this will correct itself as your home's relative humidity decreases. Avoid placing hardwood furniture directly in front of radiators, heat runs or fireplaces. Don't expose hardwood furniture to continuous direct sunlight. Draw the curtains occasionally. Store table leaves as close as possible to the table. Keep them in an upstairs closet rather than in a damp basement, so that the table leaves are adjusting to the same relative humidity. Tender loving careIt's surprisingly simple to protect and enhance hardwood's natural beauty. All that's needed is some tender, loving care. Here are a few tips from the experts: Read the manufacturer's care directions for wood furniture carefully and keep them handy for future reference. Hardwood furniture surfaces also can be cleaned with a mild non-alkaline soap and water. Use the suds on a damp sponge or cloth, but be sure to pretest the solution on an out-of-sight-section to make sure it doesn't damage the finish. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and buff lightly, following the grain. Hardwood finishes benefit from an occasional waxing or polishing. A paste wax can be applied every six to twelve months. Remove old wax first with a mild non-alkaline soap and water solution.Avoid waxing urethane-finished furniture. Waxing these surfaces causes them to gather dust and dirt rather than repel it.

slide 4 Repairs made simpleMinor damage to solid hardwood furniture can be repaired quickly and effectively with the right materials, a bit of elbow grease, and some careful attention to detail. More complex repair or refinishing jobs are best left to professionals, especially if the hardwood furniture has one of today's "super finishes". Scratch and Nick First AidWhen preparing to repair small nicks or scratches, always test an inconspicuous area of the furniture first to make certain the mixture won't damage the finish. FinishTreatmentDark Wood or StainFill scratches with shoe polish that matches the lightest shade of the finish, or rub with walnut or Brazil nut meat in the direction of the scratch. A child's crayon or felt-tipped marker can also be used for wood furniture care.CherryFill the scratches with cordovan or reddish shoe polish that matches the wood, or apply darkened iodine with a cotton swab or thin artist's brush. Light Wood or StainFill scratches with a tan or natural shoe polish, or apply darkened iodine diluted 50 percent with denatured alcohol to the hardwood furniture. Stain removalToday's high-performance finishes demand special and wood furniture care when it comes to stain removal. While there are countless remedies for stains, some may damage the furniture's finish. If you're at all unsure, you should call a professional refinisher to take care of it. These common stains often can be treated with do-it-yourself furniture first aid. But bear in mind: always test your remedy on a small area to see if it removes the stain without disturbing or damaging the finish.

slide 5 StainTreatmentWater Marks and RingsOften, rings are in the wax, not the finish. Cover the stain with a clean, thick blotter, press down with a warm iron, and repeat. Or rub with salad oil, mayonnaise or white toothpaste. Wipe dry and wax or polish.White MarksRub with a cloth dipped in a mixture of cigarette ashes and lemon juice or salad oil. Or rub with a cloth dipped in lighter fluid, followed by a mixture of rottenstone and salad oil. Wipe dry and wax or polish.Milk or AlcoholUse your fingers to rub liquid or paste wax into the stain. Or rub in a paste of boiled linseed oil and rottenstone with the grain, substituting pumice for dull finishes. Or rub with ammonia on a dampened cloth. Wipe dry and wax or polish. Other home remediesDuring everyday use, your hardwood furniture may be subjected to mishaps and spills which temporarily mar its finish. ProblemTreatmentCigarette Burns Rub with scratch-concealing polish, or with a paste of linseed oil and rottenstone, working with the grain until the burn mark disappears.Heat MarksRub gently along the grain, using a dry steel wool soap pad or a cloth dampened with camphorated oil or mineral spirits, or rub gently along the grain with extra-fine steel wool. Wipe clean and wax or polish.Nail PolishBlot the spill immediately, then rub with fine steel wool dipped in wax. Wipe dry and wax or polish.

slide 6 Paint MarksIf fresh, remove latex paint with water and oil-based paint with mineral spirits. If dry, soak spot in boiled linseed oil, wait until paint softens and lift carefully with a putty knife or wipe with cloth dampened with boiled linseed oil. Residue can be removed by rubbing along the grain with a paste of boiled linseed oil and rottenstone. Wipe dry and wax or polish.Sticking PaperDampen the paper thoroughly with salad oil, wait five minutes and rub along the grain with extra-fine steel wool. Wipe dry and wax or polish.Wax or GumHarden the substance by holding an ice cube wrapped in cloth against it, then use your fingernail or plastic credit card to remove it. Rub the area with extra-fine steel wool dipped in mineral spirits. Wipe dry and wax or polish. Keep your hardwood furniture looking greatHardwood furniture is made to be used and enjoyed and accidents happen. Especially when there are small children at home. Take these steps to keep damage from everyday life to a minimum: Unless your hardwood furniture has a new "super finish" to protect it, use coasters to prevent spills, stains and damage from hot dishes. Blot all spills immediately. Keep solvents, alcohol, nail polish and polish removers away from your hardwood furniture surfaces. Quadrant Designs has manufactured and installed this modern but contemporary kitchen using a mixture of Corian work surfaces with a seamless integrated prep bowl as a feature together with Niemann doors and Walnut veneer accents on the wall shelves and breakfast nook. The installation has a distinct European flair which significant attention to detail. (will take some pics of the installation)

Walter Sisulu University Foundation:

Completion of the WSUF offices in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Using a mixture of Walnut and Maple, the offices have a crisp high-end look and feel, perfect for the clients needs. Done in conjunction with Sight Projects, the project was turned around in Three weeks including the full office strip-out and re-fit. The items manufactured include an inlayed boardroom table boasting bookmatched veneer inlays and multi-purpose side wall server.

Mowana Lodge, Botswana:

Casegoods and restaurant furniture finished in solid Rhodesian Teak give an authentic African bushveld feel as well as being hardy and long wearing.
